Can one defame a building? Or an entire city? We ask because The Londoner is reeling from Ben Judah’s attack on London in the New York Times.

He says “the buses are still dirty, the people are still passive-aggressive, but something about London has changed”.

He goes on to write that The Shard “encapsulates the new hierarchy of the city”. On the top floors, “ultra high- net worth individuals entertain escorts in luxury apartments”. How exciting. And untrue.

“It wouldn’t take an ounce of research,” complains a source close to the Shard’s owners, “to know that the top floors aren’t occupied by billionaires, call girls or anyone else. It’s a figment of his imagination!”

But could the Shard sue for the hurt of being accused of housing such debauchery?
