Tamer times for party people

Is London’s party scene less adventurous these days or is the nightlife as wild as ever? It was a question pondered by guests including Pippa Middleton’s friend Katie Readman (left) and fashion blogger Alice Naylor-Leyland (right) at last night’s Tatler exhibition of the 50 best party pictures of the past 50 years at Annabel’s nightclub .

“Society isn’t any less exciting but it’s more events and gallery openings these days and fewer private parties,” said designer Nicky Haslam. “There used to be country parties with debutantes every weekend. Now people fly their guests out for exotic parties in foreign countries.”

But Andrew Lloyd Webber, whose new show about the Profumo affair, Stephen Ward, opens in December, thinks the social scene is less risqué. “I wasn’t around 50 years ago but as I’m writing a musical that’s set then, I’d probably say that it’s got a little tamer. You could get away with a lot more back then.”
