'Scourge': Boris Johnson wants to ban plastic bags

Boris Johnson has called for plastic bags to be banned in London stores after retailers failed to cut sufficiently the number they give out.

The Mayor called the bags "an unnecessary scourge on our environment", saying he wanted to "make London a plastic bag free city".

Charging 5p a bag, the cash going to good causes, could cut those issued by 90 per cent - about 1.4 billion bags a year.
