Sadiq Khan showed Donald Trump how to respond to a tragedy when he tweeted his condolences to the victims of the worst mass shooting in modern US history.

The Mayor of London’s response was in stark contrast to that of Trump after the London Bridge terror attack rocked the capital in June, with the US President wasting little time in lashing out at Khan.

Trump tweeted: "At least 7 dead and 48 wounded in terror attack and Mayor of London says there is "no reason to be alarmed!”

It came after Khan had issued a statement assuring Londoners not be alarmed at the increased police presence in London in the wake of the attack.

Over the following days, Trump blasted Khan's response to the London Bridge terror attack for a second time, describing it as “pathetic”.

He wrote: “Pathetic excuse by London Mayor Sadiq Khan who had to think fast on his "no reason to be alarmed" statement.”

Mr Khan’s response to Monday’s massacre in Las Vegas struck a different note, however.

He reached out to the victims and their families after 50 people were killed in Las Vegas when a gunman opened fire on crowds at an outdoor music festival.

The Mayor wrote on Twitter: “A deeply sad day for the city of Las Vegas. London sends our condolences to the victims and their families.”

A number of people have taken to Twitter to point out the differences in the two responses.

One person wrote: “Offering condolences to Trump as well, unlike Trump who took an opportunity to smear Sadiq Khan and Muslims after London terror attack.”

Another added: “Noteworthy that Mayor Khan didn’t attack the mayor of Las Vegas like Trump did after the London attack. Thank you, Mayor Khan.”

Thousands fled as the killer — named as 64-year-old Stephen Paddock — fired from a room on the 32nd floor of a hotel and casino overlooking the Strip.

Donald Trump has been briefed on the massacre and tweeted: “My warmest condolences and sympathies to the victims and families of the terrible Las Vegas shooting. God bless you!”
