Bookmakers today backed David Cameron to be in Downing Street by next month.

William Hill had Mr Cameron 1/6 favourite to be Prime Minister on June 1, while Ladbrokes offered 2/7 that he would be PM by June 6.

Both bookmakers made Gordon Brown 7/2 still to be in office, with Nick Clegg a 33/1 shot.

They also offered odds of 7/4 that there would be a second General Election during 2010.

Hills spokesman Graham Sharpe said: "The results have made it somewhat difficult to work out who is likely to form the next Government, but punters are already betting on General Election 2 in 2010."

Ladbrokes had David Miliband as evens favourite to be next permanent Labour leader, with Alan Johnson, Ed Miliband, Ed Balls and Alistair Darling all 8/1, followed by Harriet Harman 10/1 and Lord Mandelson 12/1.

Ladbrokes said a hung Parliament would cost the industry £5 million.

Spokesman Nick Weinberg said: "The only thing certain is that the bookies had a night to forget. No overall majority was the result that's given us nightmares throughout the campaign.

"We would relish another crack of the whip later this year. And given the lack of a clear winner there's every chance we could be heading back to the polling station before too long."
