Boris Johnson has weighed into the so-called “Trousergate” scandal by joking that Theresa May wears “lederhosen”.

The Prime Minister has been criticised in recent weeks after being photographed for a magazine feature wearing a pair of brown leather designer trousers which cost almost £1,000.

Nicky Morgan, a former Cabinet minister, was banned from Number 10 this week after criticising Theresa May for wearing the trousers, explosive text messages revealed.

Earlier this week Mrs May insisted she was not out of touch with ordinary people because she opted to wear costly clothing.

Mr Johnson, who is used to being the focus of barbs from the Prime Minister, took an opportunity to poke fun at Mrs May while addressing a diplomatic reception in London’s Lancaster House.

The Foreign Secretary, who supported Brexit, highlighted the close trade links between the EU and UK before joking: "Our wonderful PM actually wears lederhosen."

Mr Johnson also highlighted Nigel Farage's links to Donald Trump as he told the assembled diplomats about the UK's export achievements - sending sand to Saudi Arabia, boomerangs to Australia and "Nigel Farage to America".

At the Christmas reception, attended by ambassadors, high commissioners and the press, Mr Johnson said he was in favour of "a free press, freedom of speech, free universal suffrage and free drink" but he was "not necessarily in favour of free movement".

The former London mayor also spoke about the Government's infrastructure investment plans including Heathrow - which he said was the "right idea, wrong place".
