This was the moment Boris Johnson could not remember the name of the Conservative candidate for the Clacton by-election.

The Mayor of London, who was taking part in an LBC Radio programme, struggled to recall the name of the man hoping for the seat.

Presenter Nick Ferrari put the question to Mr Johnson, a Tory candidate for next year’s General Election, during Ask Boris.

Mr Johnson said: “We’ve got a fantastic guy called…he’s a superb man…Sterling, Girling something like that.”

Video footage shows the politician growing increasingly red in the face and asking Ferrari to put him out of his misery.

He continued: “Tell me the name, come on. Stop sitting around like a great big fat Buddha, tell me the name of this guy.”

When he was eventually told it was Giles Watling Mr Johnson said: “Ah yes, I knew it was something to do with Ling…Tingaling.

“You got me there – well done.”

The by-election, triggered by Mr Carson’s defection to Ukip, is due to take place on Thursday.
