Defeated Labour leadership hopeful David Miliband has not ruled out taking charge of the party at some point in the future.

The former foreign secretary believes his brother Ed has "done well" since taking control of Labour by a narrow margin, and it is a "very difficult job being leader of the Opposition, especially in the first year of a Parliament".

The South Shields MP told the Journal newspaper today: "I have no plans to return to frontline politics - at the moment, that is.

"For now, I'm doing what's best for the party and leaving the field open for Ed to lead the party.

"I've got to admit I wish the leadership campaign had gone differently but who knows what will happen in the future?"

Ed Miliband has been criticised by some commentators for his performance against David Cameron since taking over in September.

Earlier this month, Mr Cameron made Labour supporters wince when he said in the Commons: "He's been doing the job for the last three months and people are beginning to ask 'When's he going to start?'."

David Miliband, 45, stood down from frontline politics when he lost to his brother.

He told the Journal he plans to remain an MP at least until the next general election, which is due in five years.

He believes he was right not to take a place in the shadow cabinet, as it would have been a "distraction".
