Ed Miliband has waded into the row over the colour of a dress.

The leader said it was an "official Labour party position" that the garment, which has sparked global debate, was white and gold, not its apparently true colours of black and blue.

Speaking to ITV's deputy political editor Chris Ship, Mr Miliband added: "I'm not sure I should enforce collective discipline across the shadow cabinet on this, but for me it's white and gold."

It is unlikely the politician's intervention will settle the dispute, which has continued with renewed and irreverent vigour in the wake of Mr Miliband's comments.

Mr Miliband was asked about the dress, which sellers Roman Originals have confirmed is black and blue, on the day of his party's pledge to cap university tuition fees at £6,000 - down from its current level of £9,000.
