'EU Supergirl' activist escorted out of Brexit talks press conference

A Remain campaigner dressed in a superhero outfit was escorted out of a Brussels press conference summing up the latest round of Brexit talks.

Madeleina Kay, nicknamed ‘EU Supergirl’, sat in the front row of the auditorium holding a card that read “Theresa Maybe Brexitland” just before the press conference was due to begin.

Ms Kay is a staunch Remain campaigner from Sheffield and had travelled to Brussels this week to protest against Britain’s exit from the EU.

She left the auditorium before Brexit Secretary David Davis and the EU's chief exit negotiator Michel Barnier started speaking.

Ms Kay shared a photo of herself dressed in the superhero outfit earlier this week with the caption: “SuperGirl made it into the #EU parliament. Fighting to #StopBrexit at the #EWRC. Will fight for to the end for my European citizenship.”

The Telegraph’s Brexit correspondent James Rothwell tweeted: “This is EU Supergirl who is sitting in front row of Brexit talks press conference in Brussels.”

Bernd Thomas Riegert, senior European correspondent at DW News, said: “Madeleine Kay [sic], dressed as Supergirl, campaigning for #EU during #Brexit press conference. Security not sure what to do.”

Sophia McBride, from Sky News, tweeted: “EU supergirl causes more of a stir than Davis and Barnier pre-#Brexit press conference.”

Mr Davis and Mr Barnier were holding the press conference after the fifth round of negotiations came to a close.

The EU’s chief exit negotiator said he would not recommend that talks should start on the post-Brexit UK/EU trade relationship at next week's European Council summit.

He added that the negotiations ended without making any "great steps forward" and there was "deadlock" on the UK's financial settlement.

Mr Barnier's comments represent a setback to the UK Government, which had been hoping to persuade the remaining 27 EU leaders at the October 19 summit that sufficient progress had been made on the divorce deal to move on to discussions on the future UK/EU relationship on issues including trade.

Mr Davis said while there was still much work to be done, the talks had made "significant progress" since June.
