George Galloway was heading for a return to London politics after losing his Bradford West seat to Labour.

The maverick former Respect MP is expected to throw his hat in the ring for the Tower Hamlets mayoral race.

He has said he could “return to the streets of East London” if defeated at the general election.

Mr Galloway, who was defeated by more than 11,000 votes following a campaign mired in controversy, has also said he could run in next year’s race for City Hall.

The 60-year-old politician has been reported to the police for allegedly tweeting about an exit poll before voting had finished in a breach of election laws.

Labour’s Naseem Shah, who won with more than 19,000 votes, criticised her rival’s campaign, saying it had “demeaned democracy”. He claimed she had lied about being forced into marriage when she was a teenager.

In a rally held in London last week to support the disgraced ex-mayor of Tower Hamlets, Lutfur Rahman, Mr Galloway hinted that he would “return to the streets of East London” after the election was finished.

Mr Rahman was removed by the High Court last month when his election was declared corrupt and illegal. The re-run will be held on 11 June but the deadline for nominations is 14 May.

Mr Galloway, known as ‘Gorgeous George’, has a strong following in the borough. Much of Tower Hamlets lies in the parliamentary constituency of Bethnal Green and Bow, which he won in 2005, before standing down in 2010.

The Scot has also suggested he could run for City Hall. “If I am not re-elected I will run,” he said.
