Lembit Öpik loses but promises: I’ll be back

Lib-Dem Lembit Öpik told of his shock today after losing his seat, saying: "It's a sad time for me. I didn't expect the result and neither did my team."

Tory Glyn Davies overturned a 7,173 majority, beating him by 13,976 votes to 12,792 in the mid-Wales constituency of Montgomeryshire.

Mr Öpik, 45, an MP since 1997, may have paid a price for his celebrity lifestyle and his colourful private life.

His long-term relationship with weather presenter Siân Lloyd ended when he began dating Cheeky Girl pop star Gabriela Irimia and he has also gone out with 22-year-old underwear model Katie Green.

In an emotional speech after the result, he said it was "very disappointing" but added: "In the words of Arnie Schwarzenegger, I'll be back.' "
