Hit BBC drama Sherlock is set to return to screens for a one-off special, followed by a series of three new episodes.
The last series, starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock and Martin Freeman as Dr John Watson, saw the famous detective return from the dead. Fans were left on the edge of their seats as Sherlock returned to come face to face with his biggest mystery yet – every video screen in London broadcasting the face of Moriarty.
The special episode is expected to premiere on Christmas Day, with Mr Freeman dropping hints earlier this week it was on the cards. However, the BBC have yet confirmed any dates and it could even be on UK screens at an earlier date.
Steven Moffat, co-creator, writer, and executive producer, said: “A special, plus a new series of three episodes - it's a record-breaking run.
“Of course, it's far too early to say what's coming, but we're reasonably confident that the very next thing to happen to Sherlock and John, is the very last thing you'd expect.”
Co-creator Mark Gatiss teased Sherlock and Watson will be going into “deeper and darker water than ever before.”
He said: “Series four, at last. It's always special to return to Sherlock but this time it's even more special as we're doing, a special.”
Yesterday the BBC teased fans last night with a series of tweets hinting at a return. The BBC one Twitter account created the hashtag #221back and changed their profile picture to an image of Moriarty.
