3-D helmet gives you giant screen viewing

The way ahead: a HMZ-T1 "personal viewing" helmet
10 April 2012

A helmet that gives the wearer a cinema-style viewing experience goes on sale soon.

Called a "personal 3-D viewer", it uses two 0.7-inch screens mounted inside the helmet to give the effect of watching a giant 750-inch screen.

Headphones recreate surround-sound.

The £800 Sony gadget will go on sale in the UK in November. The firm says the gadget, called the HMZ-T1, "offers a spectacular new style for viewing both 2D and 3D content.

"Simply slip the device onto your head to experience the movie theatre-like virtual screen expand before your eyes," Sony said.

However, experts say the gadgets are unlikely to be seen on commuters just yet. "It's a completely bonkers idea using their existing technology in a wacky way," said Stuart Miles of gadget website Pocket Lint.

"I think we're unlikely to see these on the Tube - for one thing people will be worried about their bags being stolen. It probably won't be something we all own."
