Remember Art Selfies? Well, Google has just outdone itself...

Google has released new augmented reality filters to its Arts and Culture app. These new selfie filters are all themed around famous pieces of art, by artists such as Van Gogh to Frida Kahlo. There are also filters based on historical items like ancient Egyptian necklaces.

Starting today, you can use "Art Filter" in the Google Arts and Culture app to become a piece of art yourself.

It isn't just famous paintings, either, you can also see how you look with a Japanese helmet on to channel your inner Samurai, and wear plenty of other artefacts traditionally displayed in museums.

Google shared a blog post with the new update, explaining, "Thanks to our partners who make their amazing collections available online, we were able to create five educational and fun 3D-modelled augmented reality filters based on iconic paintings, objects and accessories from all over the world".

The new feature is also going to help users fully immerse themselves into history, serving as something of an interactive lesson on the context of many famous artworks.

Here's how to do it yourself

To use the filters, you need to download the free Google Arts Culture app from the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store.

Once you've got it downloaded and launched into the app, tap on the rainbow camera icon at the bottom of the homepage.

From this menu, you'll be able to choose your desired filter and coming up with some glorious creations.

As mentioned, Google has made care to create each of these filters so you can explore some artefacts in high-quality detail from every angle. Before you try on the filter, you’ll also see more about its history and context.

Et voila, once you've got your wonderful creation saved, Gogh ahead and share it online by using the hashtag #ArtFilter.

This feature is the next step for Google since it introduced the amazingly popular Art Selfie around two years ago.

The Arts and Culture app doesn't store any of your data since it processes the AR tech locally.
