Google Glass can now help you navigate London's buses and Tube

Google has added Tube and bus directions for London to its controversial Glass wearable computer.

The update allows commuters to see live updates and directions in a corner of their vision as they travel through the capital.

It comes as Google prepares to launch the first app store for the £1,000 glasses, which are expected to go on sale to the public next year.

Users access the directions simply by telling the glasses where they want to go. Google’s servers then work out the quickest route and display it on screen, even telling people when they need to change tubes or buses, and how far away their nearest stop is.

‘City dwellers rejoice,’ said Google.

‘Buses, street cars, subways; if there’s a way to get there by public transit, Glass will show you how with step-by-step directions.’

The service uses data from Google’s existing maps service.

‘You’ll be able to see all sorts of helpful info, like where to change trains, how far you have to walk to the bus stop and how long it should take to reach your final destination,’ said Google.

However, the firm has already come under fire in the UK from the Department of Transport, who banned drivers from using the glasses.

A Department for Transport (DfT) spokesman told Stuff magazine: ‘We are aware of the impending rollout of Google Glass and are in discussion with the Police to ensure that individuals do not use this technology while driving.’
