Commuters were given cause for morning cheer thanks to a railway worker's nod to the 'Boaty McBoatface' saga.

A South West Trains service from Portsmouth to Waterloo was given the humourous name 'Trainy McTrainface'.

Matthew Fifield, a 17-year-old kitchen porter, said the name change improved his mood when he boarded the train at Haslemere, just before 8.40am on Tuesday.

He told the Standard: "My trains were all delayed today so it brightened my morning to see it."

Other commuters took to Twitter to salute the cheeky worker.

A South West Trains spokeswoman confirmed the "one-off" name change was genuine.

She said: "It is a one-off by one of our creative guards who wanted to bring a smile to the face of our customers."
