Driver sparks rail delays by somehow parking car on fenced-off stretch of track

Scores of rail passengers faced delays today after a wayward driver somehow managed to abandon their car in the middle of a fenced-off stretch of track.

Operator Midland Metro announced the blockage outside Snow Hill station in Birmingham at about 8am, warning people to find alternative routes.

They also tweeted photographs of the abandoned Peugeot 207 straddling a rail in a completely enclosed area of track.

Over a period of three hours, the operator then provided updates for bewildered passengers travelling between Birmingham and Wolverhampton.

The incident ended with police and rail officials still none the wiser how the vehicle had found its way onto the rails.

One Twitter user asked: "How on earth did it end up there? #SnowHill"
