Huge queues have formed outside several stations in south London after trains were halted due to a signal failure.

Commuters travelling from Balham are facing delays of up to 30 minutes after overground trains travelling to Victoria were cancelled at around 8am this morning.

A tweet from National Rail said engineers have fixed the problem but told passengers to expect delays and cancellations throughout the morning.

Queues have also formed outside Tooting Broadway and Tooting Bec London Underground after travellers tried to find alternative routes to work.

Frustrated commuters posted images of crowded stations, while others said they forced to travel by taxi instead.

Strategy director Nicholas Dear said: “Seems every other overground train was not stopping at Balham and thus everyone piled into the underground.”

Josh Coe tweeted: “Travel chaos, queuing all over. Delayed trains. Tube stations closed. This is Balham overground. Sort it out @TfL.”

A spokesman at Transport for London confirmed no stations have been closed but entry might be restricted to prevent overcrowding.
