Shocked radio presenter Jeremy Vine found an online train ticket for a trip from Exeter to London Paddington costing a whopping £990.

Mr Vine shared an image of the sky-high fare, roughly the same price as a flight to Australia, on Twitter.

By comparison, the screenshot showed a regular single for the two-hour journey cost just £72.50.

Train operator Great Western Railway said the cost was the result of an error.

A stunned Mr Vine wrote: “Is this some kind of record?

“One way train ticket from Exeter to Paddington, 1st class, nearly ONE THOUSAND pounds?”

The train company wrote back: “Thanks for flagging this up Jeremy!

“Something has clearly gone wrong and we'll make sure it’s looked into straight away.”

“That’s right,” said another tweeter. “It should have been nearer £1,500.00.”

Another follower wrote: “I think even the DUP would baulk at paying that.”

“That must be for the whole train,” joked another. “You can buy the whole train can't you?!”
