The long-term closure of a Finsbury Park station entrance - which commuters feared would spell years of chaos - has been postponed until further notice.

Transport for London (TfL) had planned to shut the Wells Terrace entrance to Finsbury Park station for two-and-a-half years for renovation work.

But today it said the closure, which was set to take effect from Monday, was being delayed to "minimise disruption".

At Christmas, there were chaotic scenes as diverted passengers sought to use the major north London station because late-running engineering work meant that Network Rail was unable to open King's Cross.

When closure plans - part of a £220million redevelopment of the area - were announced earlier this year, the news sparked fears among commuters it would lead to more regular overcrowding.

Finsbury Park is the fourth busiest Underground station outside zone one. It serves the Victoria and Piccadilly lines as well as National Rail services.

The number of people using the station during the week has increased by 20 per cent since 2010.

A spokesman for TfL said: "We are reviewing our options of how best to continue to deliver improvements at Finsbury Park Tube station."
