Commuters faced rush hour chaos at Paddington station after a man died when he was hit by a train.

All services between the station and Reading were cancelled or delayed by up to 90 minutes following the incident on Tuesday afternoon.

The man was hit at Twyford station, between Slough and Reading, around 3.45pm.

A British Transport Police spokeswoman confirmed he was pronounced dead at the scene.

She added: "Officers are on scene alongside paramedics from South Central Ambulance Service, however a person has sadly been pronounced dead.

"We are now working to identify the person and inform their family.

"This incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner."

A spokesman for National Rail said: “There is no firm estimate yet of how long the line will be blocked, but it is likely to continue until at least 5pm.

“When the line reopens, trains may be delayed until at least 6.30pm, as services return to normal.”

A spokesman for Great Western Railway added: "Chiltern Railways, Cross Country, South West Trains and London Underground are conveying passengers via any reasonable route until further notice.

"Arrangements have been made for Great Western Railway rail tickets to be accepted for these journeys."

Fans travelling to London for Reading’s clash with Arsenal this evening at the Emirates Stadium will be caught up in the delays.
