Sadiq Khan has hinted car-free days could be on their way to London in a bid to get people walking and cut air pollution.
Mr Khan’s office mooted the move as Paris prepared to ban cars from 400 miles of its streets this Sunday.
The French capital is one of a host around the globe marking World Car-Free Day.
Hundreds of residents are set to take to their bikes or explore the French city on foot instead of sitting behind the wheel.
Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo has already backed the idea of a slimmed-down on the first Sunday of each month for streets around the Champs Elysees.
And today, the Mayor of London’s office said Mr Khan was “supportive” of the idea hitting London in the near future.
It comes as plans move forward to pedestrianise Oxford Street by 2020, in time for the launch of Crossrail.
A spokesman for the Mayor of London told the Standard: “The Mayor is looking into a range of dynamic proposals on improving public spaces including traffic free days and plans for the pedestrianisation of Oxford Street.
“He is overseeing hard-hitting new measures to tackle London’s polluted air and is supportive of events like car-free days that both lower toxic car fumes and encourage pedestrians to get out and enjoy their streets more.”
Last October, a poll by YouGov showed overwhelming support for a car-free day similar to the one in Paris.
In all, 63 per cent of respondents backed motor vehicles being banned from the central third of the city for one day.
And 58 per cent of people were supportive of having one every month.
