Furious commuters have faced a second day of chaos as north-bound trains from London St Pancras were hit by delays and severe cancellations.

Damage to overhead wires at Luton sparked a “meltdown” on the capital’s transport network on Tuesday as passengers were left stranded on platforms and forced to cram into carriages.

Customers have now been warned that chaos will continue until at least Thursday.

Govia Thameslink services were hit with delays and cancellations between St Pancras and Bedford, Luton, Sutton, Sevenoaks and Gatwick Airport.

East Midlands services were unable to run from the central Londonstation towards Nottingham and Sheffield.

Frustrated travellers took to Twitter to express their fury over the issues.

Jackie Davis shared a picture of huge crowds forming at the station and branded the situation “chaos”.

Trevor Shaw added: “Stuck at St Pancras station as no trains or drivers for now.”

Rachel Parker wrote: “Don’t bother coming to St Pancras. #commuterhell.”

Another user said he had waited more than an hour and 15 minutes for a train.

National Rail said in a statement posted on their website: “On Tuesday afternoon, damage was caused to the overhead wires between Luton and London St Pancras International. Network Rail were able to fix the wires, but a signalling problem occurred as a result of this damage.

“This is causing major disruption to journeys between Bedford and London St Pancras International. We expect this disruption to continue until the end of service tomorrow, Thursday 10 November.

“A severely limited train service will be in operation and customers are advised to use alternative routes, as services that are able to run are likely to be extremely busy.”

Thameslink customers are advised to use London buses, Overground and Underground services.

East Midlands passengers are advised to use replacement bus services or London Midland trains between London Euston and Northampton, CrossCountry between Derby, Leicester, Birmingham and Peterborough and Virgin Trains East Coast and Virgin Trains on reasonable routes.
