Asda has revealed it is reversing its decision to put a £99 pre-authorisation transaction on payments made at the petrol pump.
The £99 petrol charge was designed to ensure that drivers have enough money in their account when paying for fuel.
The supermarket had trialled the scheme with the aim to roll it out in all of its stores.
However Asda announced on Thursday that it was suspending the scheme until they can be "given assurance that all banks are able to comply with the rule change."
Asda became the first supermarket to trial the charge last month.
After payment for the petrol has cleared, the money will reappear on a customer's bank balance. It should take around 20 minutes for the funds to reappear.
However in a few cases it has taken a couple of days.
In one incident, a customer was charged £99 for £5 worth of fuel and claims she had to wait over two days for the money to be returned to her account.
Asda said it's because of this that they have taken the decision to halt the trial.
An Asda spokesperson said: “We always want to do the right thing for our customers, which is why we have made the decision to suspend Visa and MasterCard’s pre-authorisation transaction trial.
"The intention of Visa and MasterCard in this trial was to ensure customers had sufficient funds in their account to pay for their fuel, and the £99 would be immediately released back to customers by their bank.
Whilst we have received very few complaints about this process, until we can be given assurance that all banks are able to comply with the Visa and MasterCard rule change, we cannot continue to implement this change and risk harming our customers’ trust in us.”
