Alcohol restrictions will be imposed on visitors to next month’s Cheltenham Festival in a bid to stop rowdy behaviour.

New purchasing rules at the horseracing event, which is attended by more than 260,000 people, include limiting rounds to four drinks at a time, while free water bottles will also be handed out.

The Jockey Club decided to act after rowdy scenes last year and two professional footballers were pictured urinating into plastic cups, with one then throwing his over a balcony.

Over the four-day festival, racegoers consumed 265,000 pints of Guinness, 120,000 bottles of wine and 20,000 bottles of champagne.
