Boxer Khan joins child abuse fight

12 April 2012

Boxing star Amir Khan has become an ambassador for the NSPCC, the children's charity has announced.

The 19-year-old, who is a hero to many youngsters, wants to encourage children to be brave and speak out if they are suffering cruelty.

Mr Khan said: "It is an honour to be appointed an NSPCC ambassador and it is a role I will take very seriously."

He added: "I am lucky that I have always had friends and family around me, encouraging me to follow my dreams - some children just dream of a life free from abuse and cruelty."

The Bolton teenager, who is widely tipped to win a world title, added: "I hope my appointment will encourage more children to have confidence to speak out and believe in themselves."

In his ambassadorial role he will work with the NSPCC's schools teams, talking to children about what abuse is and how to get help.

Singers Kylie Minogue and Peter Andre, sporting greats Jonny Wilkinson and Alan Shearer, and Oscar winner Catherine Zeta-Jones are already NSPCC ambassadors.
