Britain First has inadvertently raised more than £1,300 to help refugees after a fundraising page was set-up to coincide with the far-right organisation's march through Burton-upon-Trent on Saturday.

The page was set up to rally support for refugees so "the haters will be doing good for the targets of their hate".

Taking inspiration from an initiative in the German town of Wunsiedel, Andrew Smith, created the JustGiving page to raise money for the Refugee Council, a charity that works with refugees and people seeking asylum in the UK.

On the page he wrote: "Inspired by similar events in the German town of Wunsiedel, I thought that it would make much more sense if their efforts could be put to good use in raising money for desperate refugees here in the UK.

"This way, the haters will be doing good for the targets of their hate. Hopefully you'll agree that it's a positive, uplifting message."

Staffordshire Police estimated around 210 people attended the Britain First demonstration, to protest against the building of a mosque in the town.

Donor who gave to the page left message praising Mr Smith's idea.

One said: "Well done Britain First, hating people can be good after all! Have a nice walk", while another wrote: "Thank you Britain First for raising awareness of bigotry and xenophobia, reminding us we need to constantly strive against it. Wonderful to be prompted in this way to support refugees."

By Monday evening the page had raised £1,366 for the charity.
