British soldier dies from wounds

12 April 2012

A British soldier has died in the UK from injuries sustained in an insurgent attack in Iraq last week, the Ministry of Defence said.

The soldier, from the Royal Logistic Corps, was seriously wounded on Thursday when a routine convoy to resupply the Basra Palace military base was hit by an improvised explosive device.

The soldier was treated at the field hospital in Basra Air Station before being flown back to Britain.

The MoD said in a statement: "Sadly, and despite the best possible medical care, the soldier died as a result of the injures this afternoon."

The soldier's next of kin have been informed.

The soldier's death brings the total number of British military fatalities since hostilities in Iraq began to 148.

Of those, 114 died in action. The rest of the deaths were accidents or linked to natural causes, illness, remain unexplained, or are still under investigation.
