Brown should go, says Clarke

Gordon Brown was urged to quit by former Home Secretary Charles Clarke - despite the PM's pledge to improve his performance.

Mr Clarke, who has been a consistent critic of the Brown administration, said he doubted he could deliver on that promise.

"I am very sceptical personally about his ability to pull it around. And therefore I think he probably should stand down," he told BBC1's Politics Show.

"I allow the possibility that change can be by Gordon himself transforming his performance ... but I remain sceptical about his capacity to do that."

He told the programme: "The one thing which I think is completely unacceptable is to ignore the real political situation in the country and drift along, assuming we will somehow pull it around."
