Cameron vows to engage with voters

David Cameron said he hoped to re-engage millions of voters
12 April 2012

David Cameron said he hoped to re-engage millions of voters who have been "switched off" politics in tomorrow's unprecedented televised election showdown with rivals.

The Tory leader centred his campaigning in the north west as the parties prepared for the first of the three TV debates, which is being staged in Manchester.

Mr Cameron - who has warned the format of the events could backfire because of too few questions - hailed the "historic" opportunity as he addressed a rally of supporters in Bury.

"It is a historic first for our country to have live televised debates between the people putting themselves forward to be prime minister. I called for these debates... and it is great that our democracy is moving into the 21st century on television so everyone can see us answer questions the country wants to ask.

"It is a great opportunity to try to communicate to those millions of people in our country who are switched off politics, who are disheartened by politics, who are disengaged with this election and try to convince them that it does matter, that we can bring real change in this country and there is a real choice.

"We do not have to have another five years of Gordon Brown, another five years of debt and waste and taxes.

"We can have real change with the Conservatives who have the energy, the vision, the leadership and the values to get this country moving.

"That is what these debates should be about and that is what I am determined they will be about tomorrow night."
