Canoeist Darwin and wife remanded

12 April 2012

Back-from-the-dead canoeist John Darwin and his wife have been remanded in custody accused of four further counts of deception.

Darwin, 57, and wife Anne, 55, appeared at Hartlepool Magistrates' Court charged with further offences of obtaining money by deception.

They are jointly accused of obtaining £25,186 from Capita Hartshead Teachers' Pension Scheme by deception, dishonestly obtaining £58,845 from Capita Hartshead Civil Service Pension Scheme, dishonestly obtaining £2,000 from the Department for Work & Pensions Bereavement Benefit Scheme and dishonestly obtaining £2,273 from the Department for Work & Pensions Bereavement Benefit Scheme.

Mr Darwin faced a fifth charge of dishonestly obtaining £137,000 from Norwich Union Life Services Ltd which is a charge Mrs Darwin was already facing.

Both were remanded in custody until January 18 by magistrates.

No application for bail was made.

It was the first time the couple had appeared in court together since Mr Darwin apparently came back from the dead.

They both spoke only to confirm their names and ages during the brief hearing.

Mr Darwin wore a black leather jacket, cream jumper and blue shirt, while his wife was wearing a blue sweatshirt and stripy T-shirt. They were each flanked by a dock officer.

The couple's solicitors did not apply for bail and said their clients would not be entering pleas at this stage of the proceedings.
