Chess star mother held over threats

12 April 2012

The mother of the late chess prodigy Jessica Gilbert was arrested on suspicion of threatening to kill her ex-husband after he was acquitted of raping their daughter this week.

Jessica, 19, died after falling from an eighth-floor hotel room window in the Czech Republic in July in the middle of an international chess tournament.

Her death rocked the chess world since she was widely tipped to become one of the top world players in the game.

On Thursday Royal Bank of Scotland director Ian Gilbert, 49, walked free from Guildford Crown Court where he stood trial for five counts of raping her while she was still a child, and six further sexual offences against other people.

On Saturday Surrey Police confirmed they arrested Angela Gilbert, who made an emotional statement after the case saying her daughter's life was destroyed by "the evil acts of one man", at her home in Reigate hours afterwards.

A police spokesman said Ms Gilbert, 53, was arrested just before midnight on Thursday after a third party reported she had threatened to kill Mr Gilbert.

She was held for nearly 16 hours before the Crown Prosecution Service decided not to proceed with the case. The spokesman added that Ms Gilbert was under "enormous strain".

In a statement released through Surrey Police after the trial, Ms Gilbert said: "We believe that Jessie died because of the evil acts of one man, who stole her childhood and systematically destroyed her life.

"We believe that Jessie's tragic death is a testament to the appalling suffering and damage inflicted by child abuse. She tried her utmost to survive in order to live her life to help others and she would wish to do this equally in death.

"We are immensely proud of Jessie for living her life with courage, dignity, and compassion - she was a fine example to so many and the world is a better place because of her."
