Clegg vows TV show challenge to BNP

12 April 2012

Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg has vowed to "take on" the BNP if they are invited by the BBC to take part in the Question Time programme.

Mr Clegg was questioned at the party's conference about speculation that the BNP would be allowed on the programme after its success in the European Parliament elections.

"If the BBC ask one of these fascist thugs who have been elected to the European Parliament on to one of their flagship programmes, I want us to be there to take them on," he said to loud applause.

"I respect the argument that somehow we should seek to ignore them. But it's too late. They are now elected."

Mr Clegg indicated in a question and answer session on the conference floor that home affairs spokesman Chris Huhne would be happy to take part in the programme in such circumstances, adding: "I think he will be absolutely devastating."
