The new toll comes after the Prime Minister told his Cabinet the situation "will get worse before it gets better - but it will get better".

The Downing Street spokesman said: “The PM said the rising death toll in recent days showed the vital importance of the public continuing to stick to the social distancing guidance which has been put in place by the Government, based on scientific and medical advice.

“The message to the public is: stay at home, protect the NHS, save lives."

Boris Johnson conducted the Cabinet meeting over video link, after being infected with coronavirus himself.

He is in self-isolation in 11 Downing Street.

As the number of cases increases, as has the figure being treated in hospital.

On Monday, Sir Simon Stevens, chief executive of NHS England, revealed there had been almost a 50 per cent rise in a few days in the number of people being treated for coronavirus in England’s hospitals.
