Could Fifty Shades Of Grey be Book of the Year?

13 November 2012

EL James's best-selling sensation Fifty Shades Of Grey is in the running for the National Book of the Year Award.

The book, the first of a trilogy of steamy tales dubbed "mummy porn", has become a literary phenomenon, selling more than 5.3 million copies to become the best-selling book of all time in the UK.

It is one of six titles nominated for Popular Fiction Book of the Year along with Bernard Cornwell's historical novel 1356 and Kate Mosse's Citadel.

The event, formally known as the Specsavers National Book Awards, features 10 shortlists including best crime book, best children's book and best new writer, with the winners to be announced at a ceremony in central London on Tuesday December 4.

Other shortlisted names include Great British Bake-Off judge Mary Berry, who is nominated for Food and Drink Book of the Year.

Readers are then asked to vote for their favourite from the winners of the 10 shortlists with that title named the Specsavers National Book of the Year on Tuesday December 18.

Amanda Ross, from Cactus TV which produces the awards, said: "These awards are special because they recognise and reward the authors the public are actually reading and buying.

"Following our successful partnership with Specsavers for the ITV3 Crime Thriller Awards, we're delighted to welcome them as the headline sponsors for this glittering event.

"We had an amazing party at last year's awards, and this year promises to be even better."
