UK records 156 Covid deaths and nearly 30k new cases

The UK has recorded 156 further deaths from Covid-19 taking the overall death toll to 134,144.

There have been 983 deaths in the past week an increase of 25.2 per cent compared to the previous week.

29,547 new people had a confirmed positive test result reported on September 11 reporting a week-on-week rise of 5.9 per cent.

It comes ahead of Boris Johnson’s announcement of his Covid Winter Plan for England on Tuesday.

The Times reports that mandatory face coverings and working from home will be brought back in if there is a winter surge in infections.

But government sources have said further lockdowns were not being considered.

It comes as it was revealed some 16 different variants of Covid are spreading across the UK with more than 1,000 people are in hospital battling the disease.

The most common of these is the Delta variant, of which a total of 669,401 cases have been recorded in the UK so far.

While 1,063 Covid patients were admitted to hospital on Monday September 6 - the highest figure since February 24 - hospitalisations are still far lower than when the virus peaked.
