The UK Government said that there had been a further 16,135 lab-confirmed Covid-19 cases in the UK – the highest reported daily toll since February 6.
The increase is more than 4,500 more postive teststhan were recorded in yesterday’s daily figures, when 11,625 new infections were confirmed
The Government also said a further 19 people had died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 as of Wednesday, bringing the UK total to 128,027.
Separate figures published by the Office for National Statistics show there have been 153,000 deaths registered in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.
Last Wednesday, 9,055 new cases were reported along with nine deaths.
Since June 17, 79,481 people had a confirmed positive test result, a week-on-week increase of 43.9%.
The figures came as the UK was taken off some other countries’ equivalent of the ‘green list’ due to the rising number of cases spurred on by the Delta variant.
Commenting on the data the Prime Minister’s spokesman said: “Well, that is a decision fundamentally for individual countries and governments to take.
“We’re working hard to use our vaccination programme and other methods to get this more transmissible variant under control. And with the high levels of vaccination that we’re seeing, we’re confident we can do that, allowing us to move to step four.”
