Crucifix row school reviews policy

12 April 2012

The headteacher who banned a Catholic pupil from wearing a crucifix said the school is prepared to reconsider its "no jewellery" policy.

Samantha Devine, 13, was told to remove the crucifix and chain to comply with the rules at The Robert Napier School in Gillingham, Kent.

Her father, Danny Devine, 30, of Canterbury Street, Gillingham, criticised the ban as "political correctness gone absolutely mad".

He said she was told to remove it because it breached health and safety rules.

At a recent meeting, the teenager's parents asked headteacher Fiona Miller to review her stance.

Miss Miller said: "I have agreed to take their request in writing to the next meeting of the school governors on January 24. In the meantime, I hope that Samantha will respect the school's rules about not wearing jewellery."

The Sun reported that Mr Devine stormed out of the meeting.

He said: "They were laughing at us. But we won't back down until we get it in writing that Sam can wear her crucifix rather than hide it," it was reported.

Miss Miller said: "This is an issue about a school policy. It has been in existence for many years. When parents and pupils come to the school they are made aware of the policy and for the past three years Samantha has respected it.

"If Samantha needs to visibly demonstrate her Christian beliefs we are happy for her to wear a lapel crucifix. This is about a ban on wearing dangling jewellery - it would be wrong to portray this as a religious issue."
