Dame Helen scoops top Globes award

12 April 2012

Dame Helen Mirren's regal title role in The Queen has won her the best actress honour at the Golden Globes.

The actress, who had already received a gong for her portrayal of Elizabeth I in the TV movie of the same name, said it was a "great honour". She added that she felt the award belonged to the real Queen.

"I think you fell in love with her, not with me," she told the audience in Los Angeles.

The Queen tells the story of the royal family's reaction to the death of Diana, Princess of Wales. Despite Dame Helen's success, The Queen missed out on the best picture award, which went to Babel.

The Queen had already won best screenplay for writer Peter Morgan, but Stephen Frears failed to get the best director Globe.

Dame Helen, wearing a dramatic royal blue gown with a plunging V-neck, said: "In 1952 a woman called Elizabeth Windsor at the age of 25 walked into literally the role of a lifetime.

"I honestly feel this award belongs to her, because I think you fell in love with her, not with me. I just tried to make her as truthful to herself as possible."

She paid tribute to Morgan's "incredible, extraordinary" script and Frears' work.

Dame Judi Dench and Kate Winslet, who were up against Dame Helen, went home empty-handed. They had been nominated in the best actress character for Notes on a Scandal and Little Children respectively.

Dame Helen has been tipped for an Oscar for The Queen and the Golden Globe is seen as a boost to her chances. Her first award of the night was for Elizabeth I, made by Channel 4 and HBO Films, which also received the gong for miniseries or film for TV.
