A body has been found in the search for a pilot missing since the aircraft he was flying disappeared off the coast of Wales.

Professor David Last , 79, has not been seen since his plane disappeared from radar contact off the south east coast of Anglesey on November 25.

A body has now been recovered by the Police North West Underwater Search Team, North Wales Police said.

Inspector Dave Cochran from North Wales Police: “Just after 2pm on Thursday divers recovered a body just off Puffin Island.

"The family of Professor David Last have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers from North Wales Police.

"Local officers are liaising with the coroner and Professor Last’s family have asked that their privacy is respected at this difficult time."

A statement issued by Professor Last's family last month described him as a much-loved father, husband, brother, grandfather, uncle and friend.

It added: "We are all heartbroken. We would appreciate respect for our privacy during this difficult time.”

Professor Last had been flying a Cessna aircraft when it disappeared from radar contact, sparking a major search operation.

It had flown from Caernarfon Airport to the Great Orme in Llandudno and was returning to the airport when its altitude plummeted and it vanished.
