A dog walker has died after his pet dragged him into the path of an oncoming car in Essex.

The man, aged in his 60s, was hit as he walked his dog, which police described as similar to a Pug, along Low Road in Dovercourt.

He walked home despite suffering serious head injuries in the accident between 7pm and 8pm yesterday.

But later he called for an ambulance after becoming unwell. He died in hospital yesterday evening, Essex Police said.

The car driver, who stopped at the scene to obtain the dog walker's details before driving off, has since contacted police.

The dog was unharmed in the accident, police said.

Anyone with information should contact police on 101.
