The Duke of Edinburgh joined the Queen at church in his first public appearance since injuring his back.
Philip arrived with the monarch in a chauffeur-driven Bentley for the service at St Mary Magdalene Church, in Sandringham, Norfolk.
He used a hand-rail to help him up a set of steps leading to the church but then walked unaided.
With his hands in the pockets of his tan-coloured jacket, he made his way carefully and slowly along the short icy path.
Onlookers said the 87-year-old, who had missed three engagements in eight days after hurting his back carriage driving, did not appear to be his usual self.
Bee Tice, 68, from King's Lynn, Norfolk, said: "I didn't think he looked very well. He's probably not 100%. He didn't look as robust as normal. He must be in pain I think. The fact he has come out on a cold day probably won't help."
The Duke walked behind the Queen, who wore a beige coat and matching hat, as they left church following the service, smiling as he stopped briefly to speak to 12-year-old Vanessa Wallace.
The schoolgirl, from Heacham, Norfolk, who presented flowers to the Queen, said: "He asked me where I was from. I didn't ask how he was feeling. I didn't dare."
The Duke then cautiously climbed back into the car to be driven away, watched by a crowd of about 70 people who had braved the treacherous snow-covered paths leading to the Queen's estate.
The Duke was last seen in public when he attended church at Castle Rising, Norfolk, two weeks ago. He then missed engagements in Norfolk at a health centre, school and a charity function.
