An easyJet flight from the UK was forced to divert after a passenger suffered a medical emergency.

Flight EZY6417 from Newcastle to Alicante in Spain had to divert to Nantes in France so the holidaymaker could receive urgent assistance.

A spokesman said passenger well-being is the airline's highest priority and, after landing, the person was taken to a local hospital.

The flight was then able to continue on to Alicante after the unexpected stop.

A spokesman said: "easyJet can confirm that flight EZY6417 from Newcastle to Alicante diverted to Nantes on 14 February 2015 due to a passenger on board requiring urgent medical assistance.

"The safety and well-being of our passengers and crew is easyJet's highest priority and the passenger has been transferred to a local hospital. The flight is now continuing on to Alicante.

"We apologise for any inconvenience experienced due to the diversion and resultant delay."

Newcastle Airport is ranked the 10th busiest in the UK and, in addition to easyJet, is used by a number of airlines, including Emirates, KLM, British Airways and Ryanair.
