Eight held after fatal stabbing

12 April 2012

Police have arrested eight men in connection with a street disturbance in which a 31-year-old man was stabbed to death.

The man was killed during a violent exchange in the Manningham area of Bradford, West Yorkshire, in which a 27-year-old man was also seriously injured.

Five men aged 19, 20, 22, 23 and 26 were arrested on suspicion of murder and three men aged 22, 27 and 33 were arrested for violent disorder.

A West Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said both victims had received stabbing injuries but detectives were also investigating witness reports of guns being fired.

Police were called to Highfield Place after a member of public reported a disturbance in the area.

A post-mortem on the 31-year-old man, who has not been named, is due to be held. The other victim was being treated at Bradford Royal Infirmary for serious injuries.

Forensic officers were conducting fingertip searches of Highfield Place, where a blue Volkswagen Golf stood with its passenger door wide open and its front and rear windscreens smashed.

Tarpaulin covered most of the car and resuscitation equipment lay scattered in the street beside it.

A police car, a Volvo estate, was also covered in tarpaulin further down the street.

Highfield Place and adjoining East Squire Lane lie behind the Jamia Masjid Hanfia Mosque, one of the largest mosques in Bradford.
