Eugenie visits Newcastle University

12 April 2012

Princess Eugenie is due to study English and history of art at Newcastle University, it has been reported.

The Queen's 19-year-old granddaughter will start her degree after completing a gap year which has seen her go travelling with friends.

According to reports, she visited the campus and explored possible accommodation for the first of her three years in the North East.

The Princess scored A grades in English and art and a B in history of art in her A-levels after studying at Marlborough College in Wiltshire.

Newcastle University, which has 18,000 students, can trace its origins back to a medical school established in 1834, and has been expanded since 1945 to take up a 50-acre site in the city centre.

A student survey last year named Newcastle as the best city to live in, and it boasts a lively social scene, with hundreds of pubs, clubs and bars.

The university has long been popular with students from the top public schools, and the leafy suburb of Jesmond has been seen as an enclave for the young well-to-do.

It was not known if Eugenie will take up a place in halls of residence or rent privately.

But she will be accompanied by her police protection staff, whichever she chooses.

Former Newcastle University students include comic actor Rowan Atkinson, singer Bryan Ferry and journalist Kate Adie.
