Firefighters from across Hampshire have been called to tackle a blaze at a house following a suspected explosion.

A gaping hole was pictured in the back of the home on Whale Island Way, in Portsmouth, just after midday on Friday.

Extensive damage appears to have been caused to the back of a property near the Hampshire city’s waterfront.

Smoke could be seen coming from a large hole in the terraced house while firefighters continued to hose water on it.

Paramedics treated one person for minor injuries while two others were assessed as a precaution and discharged at the scene.

Nearby residents had to be evacuated following the explosion and fire, Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service said.

Just after 2.15pm it confirmed that the blaze had been extinguished but said crews would remain at the scene for “some time” to “damp down” any hotspots.

Photos shared on social media showed smoke pouring from the roof of the building as emergency service workers arrived on site.

Fire crews from Southsea, Cosham, Fareham and Portchester were called, along with teams from Eastleigh and Basingstoke.

South Central Ambulance Service’s Hazardous Response Team was also called to the scene.

The cause of the incident has not yet been confirmed.
