Extra £150m to fight roadside bombs

Gordon Brown confirmed a £150 million package to tackle roadside bombs in Aghanistan as he warned of more "hard fighting" ahead.

The Prime Minister said he had drawn "great confidence" from his visit to the troubled country at the weekend - during which he became the first British premier since World War Two to spend the night in a war zone.

The death toll for UK troops in Afghanistan in 2009 reached 100 last week - most were killed by improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

In a statement to MPs, Mr Brown announced an extra £10 million in urgent funding was being allocated for handheld mine detectors which will operate alongside explosive disposal robots. There will also be "new and enhanced facilities" for training and improving intelligence to locate the deadly devices.

Altogether the package is worth £50 million a year over the next three years, according to Mr Brown.

"The Taliban are a determined adversary, they will not give up easily," he told the Commons.

"I am under no illusion that there will be hard fighting ahead but I drew great confidence from the immense professionalism of our service men and women and the telling effects they are already having on the enemy and the galvanising impact that they are having on the Afghan forces they are partnering."

Earlier, the PM robustly defended the UK's military commitment during a webchat on the Downing Street site.

He said the public understood the "mission is vital and that our forces will stay until the job is done".

Mr Brown insisted he would keep sending personal letters to relatives of troops killed on operations, despite criticism of his handwriting and spelling. But he dodged questions about whether ministers should meet bodies as they were repatriated.
