'Facebook bully probe' after death

Police probe Facebook bullying claims
12 April 2012

Police investigating the death of a teenager believed to have hanged himself are looking into claims he was being bullied on Facebook.

Tom Mullaney, 15, was found dead at his home in Bournville, Birmingham, on Thursday morning.

Since his death, some friends claimed via tributes on Facebook that he was being bullied on the social networking site.

West Midlands Police said although the teenager's death was not being treated as suspicious, they were looking into the claims.

A spokeswoman said an investigation had started into the circumstances of his death.

She said: "We are investigating, although we do not think the circumstances of his death are suspicious.

"We are looking at Facebook bullying as a line of inquiry."

She said Tom's family currently did not wish to make a formal tribute to the teenager but may do on Thursday, when an inquest into his death will be opened.

Messages have poured in for the 15-year-old on several tribute pages set up on Facebook, some referring to him being bullied.
