More than 5 million Brits have received two doses of a Covid vaccine

More than five million people have been fully vaccinated in the UK, official figures show.

A total of 5,205,505 people have had two doses of a coronavirus vaccine.

Government data up to April 2 shows that 31,425,682 people have had their first jab.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson hailed the success of the vaccine rollout as a “milestone”.

“We’ve reached another milestone in our vaccination programme with over five million people now having had their second jab.

“I urge everyone to take up their second dose as soon as they are offered it.”

Health Secretary Matt Hancock and Vaccine Minister Nadhim Zahawi also lauded the vaccine rollout.

Mr Zahawi tweeted: “5.2m second doses, our focus is making sure the most vulnerable groups 1-9 get their second doses. That is 99% of mortality.”

While Mr Hancock said: “Over five million people have now had their second vaccine dose.

“The vaccine is safe & effective, so when it’s your turn, come forward & get the jab.”

Dr Nikki Kanani, GP and medical director for primary care at NHS England, said the rollout was a "testament" to the hard work of volunteers and health workers.

“The biggest vaccination programme in NHS history – the fastest in Europe – reaches another significant milestone as more than five million people have now received their second dose providing them with the strongest possible protection from serious disease", she said.

“This success is testament to the tens of thousands of volunteers, everyone working behind the scenes and NHS GPs, nurses and vaccinators who are continuing to offer vaccines to all those who are eligible – so please do come forward for your second dose when called.”

It comes as the public enjoy a relaxation in restrictions over the Easter weekend.

Groups of up to six, or two households, are now able to meet up in parks and gardens after the stay-at-home order ended in England earlier this week, but socialising indoors remains banned to limit the spread of the virus.

However, Mr Johnson has warned that the country was not yet at the stage of allowing people to meet indoors.

The earliest date that families and friends could be reunited inside their homes under the Government’s road map is May 17, with the rule of six or two households then set to apply indoors.
